The major elements of the show are professional ring entertainments, horse events, family dog show, sideshows, trade and crafts stands, field exhibits and competitive classes. There is always a good range of breakfast, lunch and snack food and drink available including a licensed bar.
Main Ring Entertainment is a large part of the afternoon, and over the years Kings Bromley has maintained a high standard of professional entertainers. Main ring events usually begin between noon and 1 pm. A Children’s Fancy Dress Competition and Children’s Races also take place in the main ring. There are always various entertainments to be found around the Show Field as well as in the main ring. Please click here for the latest information.
Horse Ring activity begins at 9.30 am, and provides non-stop entertainment throughout the morning and usually well into the afternoon, depending on the number of competitors. Click here for details of all competitive classes.
Companion Dog Show is a firm favourite. Some of the classes are serious but mostly for fun. Rookery Lodge Boarding Kennels run this very enjoyable show, and further details can be obtained from Anne or Tony McDermott on 01543 472666. Entries can be made from 12.00 noon and judging begins at 1.30pm.
Competitive Classes are a major part of any country show and Kings Bromley is no exception. The main marquee is closed for judging from 10.30 until 1.00pm, when it opens for viewing all afternoon, with the prizes and awards being presented at 4.45pm. There are classes for Art, Cookery, Crafts, Floral Art, Flowers, Fruit, Photography, Vegetables, Woodworking and Young Crafts. It’s great fun to take part, so why not enter some of the classes – there’s something for everyone. Click here for a full schedule.
Craft and Trade Stands add another dimension to the Show, with plenty of variety and a “shopping experience” for visitors suffering withdrawal symptoms from their regular Saturday shopping trip. Craftsmen often demonstrate their skills as well as selling their products. All stands are open by 10.00am. For information on booking a stand please click here.
Field Exhibits offer a chance to see the work of various organisations, which can be fun and very informative. Everyone is in holiday mood and has time to chat about their interest or work. For information on booking a stand please click here.
Treasured Vehicles Competition brings in many and varied vehicles for visitors to browse around for most of the day.
Sideshows and Children’s Rides are mainly operating from 10.00am to keep the youngsters happy, and if they still have energy to spare, the Children’s Races are open to all. For information on booking a space please click here.
Show History. There have been many changes in the composition of the Show depending on the rise and fall in popularity of various events. For instance, Sheep Dog Trials were introduced in 1925 but after 1930 there was a decline in their support and they were last included in 1933. Similarly a Poultry Section was introduced in the early 1920's and became very popular before its demise in 1937. Meanwhile in 1931, a Horse Section had been started and support for this grew rapidly. For many years in the 1950's and 60's various horse events were held under the rules of the B.S.J.A. and B.S.P and some of the riders who entered classes here became household names. Although there have been a number of changes in the nature of the horse events over the past thirty years, this section continues to play a significant part in the overall programme on Show Day. Sports events have always been a feature of the Show programme. In the early years foot races as they were then called attracted entries from as far away as Birmingham, a very serious tug-of-war competition was included for many years, and brought back as a local amateur event attracting teams from local pubs, clubs and businesses. Races for children and adults were regular events but since 2000 only children's races take place. In 2004 a dog show was re-introduced.
During the 1990's, some other shows in the county were discontinued through the lack of sufficient involvement of members to organise their event. We certainly put a lot of effort into the organisation of our Show each year, and are determined that it will continue. Learn more about the Society which runs the Show. |
