SHOW NEWS

Health and Safety Fears Changed Showday Parking Policy
The duty of care owed to visitors must now prevent the movement of vehicles on the Showfield between the hours of 10am and 5pm when the Show is open to the public. Due to these concerns over the mixing of moving vehicles and pedestrians, there will no longer be any parking on the Showfield on Showday.

But the good news is that the dedicated disabled parking area for those displaying blue badges will be more than double its previous size, and will now be in the forward area of the car parking field. Another plus is that the straw bale seating and view of the rings will be unobstructed.

The one exception to the new policy has to be those vehicles taking part in the Treasured Vehicle Competition. However, after 10am and before 5pm all such vehicles will be escorted to or from the display area by a pedestrian, and only those arriving before noon will be allowed access.

Information Point for Village Organizations
Organizations might like to make use of the new Information Point to publicize their activities, particularly those which would like a presence at the Show but are not having a stand of their own. Clubs might like to explain the benefits of membership, display a list of forthcoming events, contacts and perhaps photographs. It is planned that an A2 size area of noticeboard will be made available to each organization (that’s 2 pieces of A4 paper placed with their long sides one above the other) but the final size may be larger, depending on demand. Anyone interested should please contact the Secretary just so that we will know how many boards to provide. Items for display should be fixed to the boards with drawing pins only. The boards will be in the President’s lunch marquee just inside the gate opposite to the school, and can be filled at any time until 12 noon. The marquee will be opened for display to the public when the private lunch finishes at around 2 pm.

Tug of War Competition
The National Tug of War Association has licenced the "Kings Bromley Open Competition", which will be run for the second time at the 2012 Show. With three weight classes, 600, 640 and 680, there will be a new trophy for each class. The competition will run from 11 am until 3 pm on Showday, with the weigh-in taking place from 10 am.

Any unwanted Books?
Please save any in good condition for the Society’s bookstall at the Show. Every year, this adds to the funds which are used to improve the Show and the village. Any unwanted books are always very welcome at any time of the year. Arrangements can also be made for collection. Please ring 01543 473151 to arrange delivery or collection with the organizer of the bookstall.

Fancy Making a Bird Box for the Woodworking Competition?
A template is available from the organizer, so please click here. Have a go and even those who don’t win a prize will at least have helped feathered friends at nesting time.

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning
The folks who help to clear up after the Show are getting fewer. Please could you help immediately after the Show, or on Sunday morning? Click here to contact the organiser. It is mainly picking up litter and putting equipment in the shelter ready for next year. Gloves are a good idea for both jobs. It doesn’t take very long if there are enough people, and it’s quite a nice sociable thing to do. It also says “Thanks for the Show” to the people who have worked so hard to stage the event.

Membership Cards
Please remember that these can be worn as badges using the holder supplied.

NEWS OF THE SOCIETY

Officers of the Society 2012
At the AGM in November 2011 the following officers were elected to serve the Society for the year 2011/12:

President: Mr David Stidwill
Vice President: Mrs Margaret Bolton
Honorary Treasurer: Mrs Tony Rich
Honorary Secretary: Mrs Judith Berry

A General Committee of 18 were also elected to oversee the running of the Society and Show.

Tree Dedications
Members may like to propose the dedication of a tree on the Showfield to a deceased parishioner who had been closely associated with the Horticultural Society. This process can be started by contacting the Secretary. Both new and existing trees could be dedicated.

The cost of a new tree is presently £30. All trees are native species and have to be of a decent size in order to be able to stand a good chance of survival without further attention. A plan of the existing trees showing the dedications will be displayed at General Meetings of the Society.

At the AGM in November 2011, the proposed dedication of a tree to Mr Cyril Mellor was agreed.

A Helping Hand?
Could you give a little spare time to take part in village life by carrying out one of the many enjoyable tasks which come together to make up the Show? It is not vital to be a member of the General Committee but it does help. If you would like to join the Committee, you would become part of the decision-making process affecting the Society as a whole, including such things as community projects, management and use of the Showfield etc. To join or just help, please contact the Secretary

Showfield Hedge
Some of the hedge running at the side of Crawley Lane has recently had to be grubbed out and replaced. At the moment, the newly-planted quickthorn whips look a bit lonely but hopefully in the spring will start their journey towards becoming a robust hedge.

Grants to Village Organizations
The Society is always willing to consider requests for grants and has distributed several in 2010. Any suggestions for new equipment or other ideas which would make the village an even more pleasant place to live, or in any way improve the community, either from an organization or a private individual should be addressed to The Secretary

Help Needed with Field Maintenance
To keep the Showfield in a satisfactory condition, work has to be carried out all through the year. The mowing of paths hedge cutting, strimming, tree maintenance etc is all done by a very small number of people. Additional helpers are always needed. Please come forward and offer to do just a little work on the field. Even if you can only offer an hour every fortnight, or just to help with special projects, please click here to contact the organiser.
